How to get our apps on your device, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Common questions

Are your apps free?

Each app page says what it costs. Atlas Corporis is free during its beta.

Do I need an account?

It depends on the app. If an app asks you to sign in, its privacy policy explains what that stores and how to delete it.

Where is my data kept?

Notes, bookmarks and progress are stored on your device. Clearing your browser data or uninstalling can remove them, so use the app’s export option to keep a backup.

Something broke. What should I do?

Email support@asterahub.app with the app name, your phone model and what happened. We reply within 2 working days.

Use an app in your browser

Most of our apps run in a web browser on phones, tablets and computers. There’s nothing to install: open the app’s page and tap “Open in browser” (or “Open the web beta”).

Use an up-to-date Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox. 3D apps such as Atlas Corporis load faster on Wi-Fi the first time; after that they work offline.

Install from the browser

You can add a web app to your home screen so it opens like any other app.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Open the app in Chrome.
  2. Tap the ⋮ menu, then “Install app” or “Add to Home screen”.

iPhone or iPad (Safari)

  1. Open the app in Safari.
  2. Tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”.

On iPhone and iPad, iOS may clear a web app’s saved data if you don’t open it for several weeks. Export a backup of your notes now and then.

Computer (Chrome or Edge)

Click the install icon at the right of the address bar, or open the menu and choose “Install”.

Google Play

Our Android apps will be on Google Play. While an app is in beta, Android testers join through a private Google Play test: sign up for the beta on the app’s page and we’ll email you an invite.

App Store

Our apps aren’t on the App Store yet. Until they are, use them in Safari and add them to your home screen (see above).

Install an APK safely

Some apps may also offer an APK, a file that installs an Android app without Google Play. We don’t offer any APKs yet. When we do:

  1. Download APKs only from an app page on asterahub.app. Never from a link someone sends you or another website.
  2. Check the version and file size match what the app page shows. If you can, compare the file’s SHA-256 checksum with the one on the page.
  3. When Android asks, allow installs from your browser for this one install, then switch that setting off again.
  4. Prefer Google Play when the app is there: it updates automatically.

Install a desktop app safely

Some apps can be downloaded for Windows, Mac or Linux. The app page offers the right file for your computer, with its version, size and SHA-256 checksum beside it. Many apps also run in your browser, and can be installed from there without downloading anything (see Install from the browser).

1. Download only from asterahub.app

Use the download button on the app’s page. Ignore copies on other websites or files sent to you in messages.

2. Check the file (optional, but worth it)

The SHA-256 checksum is a fingerprint of the file. If yours matches the one on the app page, the file is exactly the one we published.

  • Windows: open PowerShell and run Get-FileHash "$env:USERPROFILE\Downloads\file-name.exe", replacing the file name.
  • Mac: open Terminal and run shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/file-name.dmg.
  • Linux: run sha256sum ~/Downloads/file-name.

Compare the long code it prints with the one on the page. If they differ, delete the file and email us.

3. If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”

That’s Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. It appears for apps from small developers that it hasn’t seen many times yet; it doesn’t mean the app is harmful. If the checksum matched, click “More info”, check the app name, then “Run anyway”. If anything looks different from what the app page describes, don’t run it.

4. If your Mac says the app “can’t be opened”

That’s macOS Gatekeeper, which checks where apps come from. Apps we sign and notarise with Apple open normally. If you see a warning, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, scroll down and click “Open Anyway” for that app, but only if you downloaded it from asterahub.app and the checksum matched.

5. Keep it up to date

Check the app’s page now and then for a newer version, and download updates the same way.
